Diggin’ the history

Long before loft living and creative space, this building was built for distribution, industry, and the people who helped shape Sacramento.

HISTORY

Thomson-Diggs Company Hardware was founded in 1900 as a wholesale hardware business serving a wide geographic footprint across California and into parts of Oregon and Nevada.

In 1912, the company established its headquarters on the southwest corner of 3rd and R Streets, commissioning a four-story warehouse built at a cost of $100,000. Designed with efficiency in mind, the building featured a then-novel operational advantage: rail access that allowed trains to enter the building for loading and unloading, connecting the warehouse directly to the region’s supply routes.

From there, Thomson-Diggs distributed products via rail, wagon, and riverboat, supporting fast regional delivery across the Western U.S.

Over time, the company’s operations evolved. Thomson-Diggs remained active in the area for decades, later relocating its warehouse operations and shifting as the broader wholesale hardware landscape changed in California.

Today, The Diggs honors that legacy. We’re not starting from scratch — we’re building on a story rooted in craft, commerce, and Sacramento’s industrial backbone.
